To really understand the driving vision behind Project Forest, you should know Mike’s story.
My love for the forest goes all the way back to when I was a kid. I remember asking my dad if we could go for a walk in the forest. We ended up in the Edmonton River Valley, and I was immediately frustrated. We were on this paved trail, and I remember thinking, “this isn’t it.” I didn’t want concrete. I wanted trees. Eventually we found a small trail that led off the path and we started pushing our way through the bush until we had branches hitting us and leaves in our faces. My dad turned to me and said, “Is this better?” And I remember thinking, “Yeah. This is what a deer does.” This is how I want to move through the world.
That feeling never really left me. When I think back on it now, I remember the emotion so clearly. That pull toward nature has been there for as long as I can remember.
It all clicked for me when I was in Scouts. One of the other kids’ dads came in and taught us how to measure a tree. He talked about forestry and about the forest itself. And I remember thinking, that’s it. That’s what I want to do.
Project Forest is my way of giving the magic back that I felt in the forest as a child.
It’s about creating space for people to reconnect with nature the way I did as a kid. To step off the pavement. To get scratched by branches. To feel energetic, curious and connected again.
More than anything, Project Forest is about building a community of supporters who want to find their way back to nature and to themselves. Now, Project Forest is creating a community of organizations who are aligned with connecting people back to nature.
